About IPPNW

IPPNW

IPPNW - International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War - is a non political organization, which includes more than 60 countries and represents more than 200 thousand doctors, healthcare professionals, medical students and many other citizens that with them share the concern for the prevention of all wars, promote alternative, non violent strategies and the wish to minimize the effects of war at environmental, social and health levels. In this way, this organization seeks to protest diplomatically against the governments that assume policies of nuclear weapon production, defend the abolishment of atmospheric and subterranean nuclear tests, basing themselves on scientific studies about the dangers and the devastating effects on global health of these actions; convince governmental bodies to articulate funds spent on weapons to cover necessities, especially medical ones, in all of the civilian population and promote a sustainable economic and ecological development.

The prime role of this association and its impact at world level is irrefutable, having its efforts been recognized with the prize Diffusion of Peace in 1984 by UNESCO, and with the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1985.

The Portuguese branch of IPPNW is the Association of Portuguese Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War and is represented by Nuno Grande, M.D., PhD, recognized by the University of Porto. This association has developed a group of scientific investigations and of information of the Portuguese government about the effects to the health of victims of successive armed conflicts which happen all over the world.
