Standing atop Douro river, Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It's ancient neighbourhoods dominating the riverside, together with the remarkable bridges, form a set of unique beauty, which justifies the World Heritage status given by UNESCO to the Historic Centre. |

|
The world famous Porto wine is another reference of the city. The end result of a unique web of natural conditions, it matures to its final state in the famous cellars, just across the river, as if it was admiring the city itself. |

|
|
The monumental and artistic patrimony is rich and diverse, and it's well represented in imposing examples of Baroque art. |
|
 |
|
|
Even so, cultural life in the city is far from emptying itself in the historic patrimony. There are numerous producers and promoters of important cultural activities, which were boosted in 2001, when Porto was the European Capital of Culture - an event that opened the gates of the city to the World and to the Future. |
